Mission

  • Research is suggesting that ultra-processed food (UPF) is bad for us and should be avoided

  • The UPF term is vague and poorly defined, yet a large proportion of what you might buy from the grocery store seems to fall under this umbrella term

  • Advice to limit or even completely avoid everything this encompasses is unrealistic and not much help when trying to conduct your grocery shop

The Problem
  • Ideally, we want to see an icon displayed on food packaging to indicate the level of ultraness of the product inside

  • Until this happens, we need a framework to assess and compare different products for ourselves

  • This is what we're aiming to establish by creating a system for the classification of UPF products into a series of categories

Our Mission
  • Makes use of information already available on the product packaging

  • Quantifies the degree of ultraness of a UPF product

  • Provides a result that is easy for consumers to understand

  • Can be applied by consumers themselves, should they wish to use it

  • Could eventually be displayed on the product packaging as a single overall indicator
